Rolex’s GMT Master models have already gained a multitude of nicknames over the years: From the classic root beer through the Pepsi to the more recent blue and black Batman the only thing more creative than Rolex’s team of designers is the community of watch lovers who come up with the unofficial names for them! What will watch-fans settle on as the name for this new GMT Master model which was unveiled at the Geneva Watches & Wonders 2022 show?
It’s a Rolex – But Not As You Know It!
The latest Rolex model – Ref. 126720VTNR – is, to all intents and purposes a mirror image of the standard GMT models. Both crown and date are on the 9 O’clock side of the timepiece, which has led to some questions as to whether the Swiss brand inadvertently put the movement in the wrong way up! It shares the same ref. 3285 – the 4Hz, 70-hour power reserve in-house calibre as the standard GMT Master II models in the brand’s line-up.
The leftie GMT Master came from left-field – it was about the last thing anybody expected Rolex to unveil at the show but it is already gaining plaudits and the waiting list is sure to be as long as all of Rolex’s other models. The crown position is perfect for those who wear their watch on their right wrist, and the date at 9 O’clock makes it easy to glance under a shirt sleeve. It’s a move that would have perhaps been expected from sister brand Tudor, who already has a left-handed Pelagos model in its range – but nobody expected Rolex themselves to add such a niche watch to its collection.
GMT Master Left Handed – Which Name Will Stick?
Showcased on an Oyster bracelet, rather than the traditional Jubilee style that was so long associated with GMT Master watches, the ceramic bezel of this latest model is in green and black – some say it resembles a Minecraft block, some want to call it the “Sprite” (Despite that soft drink being yellow and green, not black and green!) or even the Starbucks! Others think the Superhero theme should be continued and are trying to make the name “Green Arrow” stick. Whatever name the watch world settles on, if this watch is an indication of the things to come from the usually very-conservative Rolex then we may be in for a treat over the next few years!
