Spinnaker has brought out a new version of its popular Cahill model. Is the Spinnaker Cahill 300 better than its predecessor?

I am not ashamed to be a fan of Spinnaker watches. They make good-looking, well specified watches at affordable prices. This latest Cahill model is no exception, with solid specs and a great selection of coloured dials.

As is customary with Spinnaker watches, the Cahill arrives in a spartan but decent cardboard box, covered in what appears to be woven nylon. If costs are to be cut anywhere, the box is the place to go and I applaud Spinnaker’s commitment to putting every penny into the watch and strap rather than a fancy presentation box and other unwanted extras.

Case and Movement

The 43mm case appears to be the same as the previous iteration of the Cahill, with a decent brushed finish. There are some sharp edges on the engraved section at the back, but at least it is a proper engraving and not a light etching. The crystal is sapphire and the bezel has a lovely 3D effect. The 12-hour bezel is a little stiff to turn but has absolutely no play once it is in position.

Inside we have the trusty Seiko NH35 automatic movement: accurate, reliable and affordable – it is the perfect choice for a watch in this category. The watch has 300m of water resistance so it’s safe to take it on most of your aquatic adventures.

Dial and Hands

This time around Spinnaker has used dots instead of numerals, and this gives the Cahill a real “retro Sub” feel. I never got bored of looking at the layered dial, which has a stunning texture and – in this “Malbec” configuration – a beautiful deep red hue. I particularly enjoyed the way the subtly-domed crystal distorts at the edges when you look at the Spinnaker Cahill from an angle.

There’s a date wheel, which is black – I wish it were red, but that’s probably asking too much at this price point. It’s not overly distracting but would have been even better if it matched the dial’s tone. Superluminova is applied to the dial and hands, and unusually for me, I was able to easily get a lume shot for once!

Strap and Buckle

Spinnaker straps are always excellent – I’ve seen this leather strap on other watches from the brand and it is as good as ever: thick, supple, comfortable and with excellent finishing all round.

The buckle is a little more pedestrian – a standard tang design with a laser etched logo. It’s absolutely fine, if unremarkable.

Overall, this is another excellent watch from Spinnaker. The brand seems to be able to do little wrong. Every iteration of their models improves on the last, and for the money, I would struggle to recommend many other brands that have the same mix of style, specifications and quality.
