We noticed the Formex essence on social media, and it comes highly rated by Watch It All About so we thought we’d take a closer look at their new model – a Chronometer grade Swiss watch for less than $700.
Introducing the Formex Essence
A COSC certified chronometer for $680 – including worldwide shipping – we wouldn’t believe it was possible, but Formex are promising just that with their new watch. The Formex Essence is a 43mm watch that combines sport and dressy looks with two patented features: a suspension system and a quick adjustment on the butterfly clasp. The clasp adjustment looks good, and though the suspension system sounds a bit gimmicky it certainly looks the part.
What is a Chronometer?
Apparently, the Biel/Bienne based microbrand will be the first established Swiss watch brand (they go back 20 years) to launch a mechanical Chronometer on Kickstarter. The watch has a Sellita SW200-1 movement with a certificate from COSC. If that means nothing to you, COSC stands for Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres, the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute, and it is the institute responsible for certifying the accuracy and precision of wristwatches in Switzerland. They only certify the most accurate watches (for example all Rolex watches are COSC certified), which for a mechanical watch means it runs between +6 and -4 seconds per day.
Buy a Formex Essence
The chronometer certified Formex Essence is $680 with free postage if you sign up for the pre-order. If $680 sounds a bit steep, they do an ETA 2824-powered version without a COSC certificate for US$ 385. That’s a bargain in anyone’s book. Early Bird Specials are available now at their website – you pay a deposit of US$ 50 now for the Essence Automatic Chronometer and US$ 40 for the Essence Automatic to secure the discounted price and delivery in about December 2018. Both versions are available with either a black, blue, brown or silver dial and different leather straps, a stainless steel and a rubber version.
